The film is opened with Seita narrating,
says that he died at September 27, 1945.
The
scene switches when Seita sits leaning helplessly with ragged clothes at the
railway station. That time the war is over. He falls down. He thinks of his sister, Setsuko.
Night comes, two janitors do their job.
There are some men dying. One of the janitors takes the tin that is held by
Seita, comes to the others to check up, and then throws the tin out.
At the same time when the tin is thrown out,
fireflies appear, then Setsuko. She sees Seita lying down. And when she
wants to approach him, the spirit of Seita holds her shoulder, smiling. She
turns and smiles back. Seita takes the tin up and gives it to Setsuko. And they go.
